The Editorial Position

Zurich rewards travellers who choose their address carefully.

The city is compact — you can walk from Paradeplatz to the Kunsthaus in fifteen minutes — but the five houses on this list occupy genuinely different worlds. One sits in a private park on the water. One is a hillside resort reached by a cogwheel railway. One occupies nine stitched-together medieval townhouses on the Rennweg. Choosing between them is less about stars and more about the kind of Zurich you want to wake up in.

Talstrasse 1, 8001 Zürich — Lakefront

Baur au Lac

The quietest kind of grandeur in Switzerland. Five generations of the Kracht family have run this house on its own private park, where the Schanzengraben canal drifts out into Lake Zurich. Interiors are calm rather than theatrical — Pierre-Yves Rochon salons, lake-facing balconies, and a level of staff recognition that turns second visits into homecomings.

The Dolder Grand

A curative hotel from 1899 reborn in 2008 under Norman Foster, with two mirrored wings folded into the hillside above the city. The draw is scale: a 4,000 m² spa, a museum-grade art collection with Dalí, Warhol, Miró and Fernando Botero placed casually in corridors, and a terrace that looks across the whole lake basin to the Alps.

Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich

Zurich's oldest grand hotel, opened in 1838 as the Savoy Baur en Ville, closed for a four-year restoration and returned in March 2024 under Mandarin Oriental. The address is unimprovable — directly on Paradeplatz, with the Bahnhofstrasse at the door — and the new rooftop terrace gives the city a vantage point it never had.

Park Hyatt Zurich

The modernist counterweight to the city's historic houses. Opened in 2004 in the financial quarter between the Bahnhofstrasse and the lake, it trades chandeliers for oak, glass, warm limestone and a rotating collection of contemporary Swiss art. Rooms are among the largest entry-level rooms in Zurich, and the service register is relaxed rather than ceremonial.

Rennweg 7, 8001 Zürich — Old Town

Widder Hotel

Nine medieval townhouses on the Rennweg, knitted together by architect Tilla Theus into a single 49-key hotel where 800-year-old frescoes sit beside Le Corbusier and Eames furniture. It is the most intimate house on this list and the most architecturally curious — no two rooms are alike, and some contain protected historic fabric you are asked not to hang a coat on.

Practicalities

Questions we are asked most

Short, verifiable answers about seasons, transport, tax and access. For anything specific to a single property, the individual profiles go deeper.

Which of the five is closest to Zurich Airport?

All five sit within roughly 10–15 kilometres of Zurich Airport (ZRH). By train, Zurich Hauptbahnhof is 10–13 minutes from the airport; from there, Baur au Lac, Mandarin Oriental Savoy and Widder Hotel are a 6–12 minute walk or a short tram ride. Park Hyatt Zurich is two tram stops further south in Enge. The Dolder Grand is the outlier: allow around 25–30 minutes by car, or take tram 3 to Römerhof and the historic Dolderbahn cogwheel railway up the hill.

When is the most expensive time to stay in Zurich?

Rates peak around major trade events and congresses, the pre-Christmas weeks when the Bahnhofstrasse lights are switched on, and clear summer weekends in June and July when lake-facing rooms sell out. The best value windows are typically late January to early March (excluding event weeks) and the first half of November.

Do all five hotels have spa facilities?

They differ enormously. The Dolder Grand operates a 4,000 m² destination spa with pools, a snow room and 18 treatment rooms. Park Hyatt Zurich has Club Olympus with a sauna, steam room and gym. Mandarin Oriental Savoy offers a compact urban spa and 24-hour fitness suite. Baur au Lac and Widder Hotel focus on treatment suites and fitness rooms rather than full wellness circuits — both can arrange therapists in-room.

Is there a city tax on top of the room rate?

Yes. The City of Zurich levies a per-person, per-night accommodation tax on guests staying in paid accommodation. It is a small fixed amount and is usually shown separately at checkout rather than in the advertised nightly rate. Expect it to be added to every booking regardless of category.

Are these hotels suitable for families?

The Dolder Grand and Park Hyatt Zurich are the most straightforwardly family-friendly, with connecting rooms, children's amenities and space to spread out. Baur au Lac has long hosted multi-generational families and can arrange interconnecting lake-view rooms. Widder Hotel, with 49 individual rooms across nine historic houses, is the least practical option for young children.
