Cookie Policy

Effective 1 January 2026. A complete, itemised account of the cookies and local storage entries used on lanternscuriouslane.lat, and how to control them.

1. What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file placed on your device by a website. Cookies allow a site to recognise your device across page loads or visits, to remember choices you have made, and — where permitted — to compile statistics about how the site is used. Related technologies include localStorage and sessionStorage, which store information in your browser rather than transmitting it with each request. This policy covers all of these technologies collectively.

2. Our approach

We run a deliberately light cookie footprint. Nothing that is not strictly necessary is activated until you give consent through the banner displayed on your first visit. We do not use advertising cookies, we do not operate retargeting pixels, we do not embed social media tracking widgets, and we do not participate in any cross-site advertising network. Your choice is stored locally and respected on subsequent visits, so the banner will not reappear unless you clear your browser storage for this domain.

3. Strictly necessary items

These are required for the Website to function securely and cannot be switched off through our preference panel.

4. Analytics items (consent required)

These are set only if you enable analytics. They help us understand which hotel profiles and guides are being read so we can prioritise updates. Data is aggregated and IP addresses are truncated before storage.

5. Functional items (consent required)

These remember choices you make so that the site behaves consistently for you. They are never used for advertising or profiling.

6. Third-party resources

Some assets are served from third-party content delivery networks. These do not necessarily set cookies, but requesting them discloses your IP address and user-agent to the provider:

  • Web fonts — typeface files loaded from a font delivery network.
  • Photographic imagery — licensed photographs delivered from an image content delivery network.
  • Mapping links — our contact page links out to a mapping service; no map is embedded or loaded until you click through, so no third-party map cookies are set on our pages.

7. Changing your choice on this site

You can withdraw or change consent at any time by clearing site data for lanternscuriouslane.lat in your browser. The consent banner will then reappear on your next visit, allowing you to make a fresh selection. You may also use the "Preferences" control in the banner to enable or disable analytics and functional categories independently before saving.

8. Browser-level controls

All major browsers allow you to block or delete cookies. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may cause parts of this or other websites to malfunction.

  1. Google Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies, or Settings → Privacy and security → Delete browsing data → Cookies and other site data.
  2. Mozilla Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data / Clear Data. Enhanced Tracking Protection can be set to Strict.
  3. Apple Safari (macOS): Safari → Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data, and Prevent cross-site tracking.
  4. Safari (iOS/iPadOS): Settings app → Safari → Clear History and Website Data, or Advanced → Website Data.
  5. Microsoft Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Manage and delete cookies and site data.
  6. Brave: Settings → Shields → Cookie blocking, with default aggressive blocking already enabled.
  7. Opera: Settings → Privacy & security → Cookies and other site data.

You can also browse in a private or incognito window, in which case all cookies and local storage entries are discarded when the window is closed.

9. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

We honour the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal where it is transmitted by your browser or extension: if GPC is detected, non-essential categories remain disabled regardless of any banner interaction. Legacy Do Not Track headers are also respected in the same way.

10. Legal basis and retention

Strictly necessary items are placed on the basis of our legitimate interest in operating a secure website. Analytics and functional items are placed only on the basis of your consent, as required by Article 6(1)(a) GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive as implemented locally, together with the Swiss FADP. Consent records are retained for twelve months to demonstrate compliance, after which you will be asked again.

11. Updates to this policy

We review this policy whenever we add, remove or change a technology that stores information on your device, and at least once a year. The effective date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised. Material changes will trigger a renewed consent request.
