Zurich's five-star market was, until the early 2000s, almost entirely historicist. Park Hyatt Zurich arrived in 2004 with a different proposition: clean lines, warm limestone, oak, glass, natural light and a contemporary art programme instead of gilt mirrors. Two decades on, following successive refurbishments, it remains the city's most convincing modern luxury hotel and — importantly — the one with the largest standard rooms.
The location suits its character. Enge is the quarter immediately south of the old town: bank headquarters, insurance houses, the Kongresshaus and Tonhalle concert hall, and then the lake promenade a short walk away. It is serious, well-kept and slightly less touristed than Kreis 1, without ever feeling remote.
Entry-level rooms start around 36 square metres, which is exceptional in a European city where 25 square metres is common at this price point. Every room has a walk-in wardrobe or dressing area, a work desk that is genuinely usable, and a bathroom with separate tub and shower. Materials are tactile rather than ornate — cherry and oak joinery, leather, natural stone and hand-picked contemporary artworks from Swiss and international artists.
parkhuus is the main restaurant: open kitchen, market-driven Swiss and European cooking, a strong brunch on Sundays and the wine tower as its architectural centrepiece. ONYX Bar, named for its onyx-stone counter, is a quietly excellent hotel bar — good classic cocktails, an unusually deep whisky and Armagnac list, and a terrace that works on summer evenings. Breakfast at parkhuus is among the better hotel breakfasts in the city, with cooked-to-order eggs and a strong Swiss cheese and charcuterie section.
Club Olympus Spa & Fitness offers a gym with current cardio and resistance equipment, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms. It is a city-hotel wellness facility rather than a destination spa, but it is well maintained and rarely crowded. On the meetings side, the hotel has a series of natural-light salons and a ballroom, and is a default choice for finance-sector events given the location.
For families, Park Hyatt Zurich is the most practical of the five outside The Dolder Grand: connecting rooms are plentiful, the staff are relaxed about children, and the room sizes mean a family of four is not negotiating for floor space.
